Prima Cuerda (Jose Alvarez)

Concert Artist and Composer Jose Alvarez was born in the city of Havana, Cuba in 1961. He began playing the guitar at an early age, receiving his primary education from his father, and namesake, renowned Cuban guitarist and musician: Jose Olivera. Mr. Olivera senior introduced his young son to the Sor and Aguado methods, as well as musical pieces by Tarrega, Villalobos, and Albentz.

By the age of nine, young Jose was recognized by musical professors Ines Causillas, Issac Nichols, and Martha Cuervos as having outstanding potential in Classical Guitar. Performing with distinguished style, he played concerts across the country.

Arriving in the United States, Jose continued his career, receiving guidance and instruction from the University of Miami, teacher and concert artist Juan Mercadar, among other renowned performers and musical institutions.
