This is an official 2018 International Jazz Day event! In 2016 Tulsa Jazz.com had the honor of being the producer of Tulsa’s first official participation since the event’s inception in 2012. (See www.jazzday.com for additional details).

Featured Artists are:

International Band: “Was Nun?”: This fabulous Jazz Sextet from “Hochschule fuer Musik Theater und Medien Hannover” in Hannover, Germany is being presented by the Tulsa Global Alliance, the Tulsa Celle Sister City Partnership, and the Taylor Entertainment Group! We are thrilled to welcome this wonderful group to Tulsa and excited about them performing in this incredible event!

The TEG Swing Band under the direction of Dr. Clark Gibson: An All-Star Swing Band custom created just for this event! The group contains a mixture of highly talented local and non-area artists performing many of the top tunes from the Swing era!

Battle Royal: In the tradition of the famous Duke Ellington, Count Basie Band battle we will have our own version featuring the Union High School Jazz Band, one of the top ranked High School Jazz bands in the state and the award winning NSU Jazz Ensemble. This incredible performance will also feature Tulsa favorite Cynthia Simmons as guest Vocalist!

The night will include swing dance lessons and performances provided by many of Tulsa’s top Swing Dancers, and much more…

“International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout the month of April.

In December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly formally welcomed the decision by the UNESCO General Conference to proclaim April 30 as International Jazz Day.

The United Nations and UNESCO now both recognize International Jazz Day on their official calendars.” (Taken from jazzday.com)

Tulsa Jazz Gives Back: A Toy Drive for James Mission October 9th 2016 at the Guthrie Green!

Donate A New Toy And Help A Child Dream Big Again!

The event Big Bands, Big Voices: The Concert Presented by SpiritBank, which happens this Sunday Oct 9th from 2:30-6:30 pm, is about music and enjoying a fun afternoon but we also know that some people might not have the ability to enjoy life every day.

There are some people whose ability to “Dream Big” as our Presenting Sponsor SpiritBank so eloquently puts it, has been deterred, derailed or smashed and quite often they’re children, and caused by circumstance far beyond their control.

An example is when a child is considered endangered in their current environment and removed from their home they get to grab a few things but mostly leave with the clothes on their back.

That’s where James Mission steps in; they have provided clothing, shoes, toys, toiletries and much more to over 2,000 children and adults since starting James Mission in 2013.james mission loads of love

James Mission provides help to foster homes, widows, single Moms, displaced children and many others.

On average they provide for 60 children a week and it continues to grow daily. It all started with just a few donations and a small table in the founder’s garage to now having their own building that contains a Resource Center and Visitation Center.

This is why, this year, we have partnered with and supported this wonderful organization and we continue that support through our upcoming event Big Bands, Big Voices: The Concert! Presented by SpiritBank.big-bands-big-voices-the-concert-updated4

On Sunday October 9th, 2016 from 2:30-6:30 pm, during the event at the Guthrie Green, we will conduct a “Toy Drive for James Mission”, the goal is for every child that they serve to have a brand new toy for Christmas and we can do it!

There will be a James Mission table where you can drop off your new, unopened toy or donation and learn more about the organization, as well as volunteers with James Mission boxes in various locations throughout the park.

It’s going to be a day of caring, loving, music, and fun…see you there.

Contact James Mission for other donation and drop off options:
