DUET JAZZ WELCOMES AWARD WINNING VOCALIST AND SONGWRITER DARA TUCKER
Vocalist and songwriter Dara Tucker has established a distinctive sound by fusing the melodic, lyrical and soulful strains of the central plains with the risk-taking verve of contemporary music. Now based in Nashville, Tucker returns to her hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma on January 18th at 8pm to perform at the city’s newest downtown music venue, Duet. This will be Tucker’s 1st Tulsa performance with her own group in over five years. Tickets (($15) are available at the door or via eventbrite or duetjazz.com .
“It’s always an honor to come back to Tulsa to share and perform my music,” Tucker said. “A lot of good things have happened over the last five years, and it’s great to do this show at Duet which is a place that is poised to become one of the best listening rooms in the region.”
Most recently, Dara Tucker toured as vocalist with acclaimed 7-string guitarist Charlie Hunter’s Trio. Additionally, Tucker has been featured on NPR’s Jazz Night In America and the Tavis Smiley Show on PBS. She is the winner of the Johnny Mercer Award, the Ben Tucker Jazz Award and the Silver Medal in the prestigious American Traditions Vocal Competition. Currently, she is collaborating with Grammy-Winning Blues & Americana Guitarist Keb Mo and Tucker’s band has also opened for Grammy-Winning Jazz Vocalist Gregory Porter.
Tucker’s current and 4th studio album, Oklahoma Rain (2017), named after the state of her birth, showcases her as a formidable songwriter, able to express love, loss and healing in one fell swoop. She creates a mosaic of sound to reflect the influences that have helped to shape her since childhood from the Gospel roots from which she sprung, to the jazz albums she listened to in secret, to the contemplative singer-songwriter and soul music of the 70’s that lulled her to sleep each night.. The album’s standout single “Radio” again plays skillfully with the theme of nostalgia as Tucker reflects on the songs of “yesteryear” that contributed to her musical foundation. “Radio” rose to # 5 on the U.K.‘s Soul and Jazz Radio Charts and was featured on BBC Radio London.
Tucker’s upcoming 5th CD is a collection of ten, new original songs that joins roots and Americana sounds with acoustic soul influences. Produced by guitarist Charlie Hunter (Norah Jones, John Mayer, D’Angelo), who plays on all the tracks, the new album is scheduled for release in mid 2019.
Dara Tucker has been featured on several of the major jazz stages in the U.S., including The Blue Note (NYC), Smoke (NYC), Snug Harbor (New Orleans), New Orleans Jazz Museum, Scullers (Boston), Exit 0 Jazz Festival, San Jose Jazz Festival, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas, World Cafe Live and City Winery (Chicago/ Nashville). In addition to 7-string guitarist Charlie Hunter, Tucker has performed or recorded with such luminaries as Vince Gill, guitarist Peter Bernstein, organist and NEA Jazz Master Dr. Lonnie Smith, drummer and vibrophonist Jason Marsalis, saxophonist John Ellis, and pianists Johnny O’Neal and Helen Sung.
